Imagine what would happen if your wallet was lost or stolen. Do you have an up-to-date record of what cards you have and which numbers to call?
Virtual Wallet serves as personal data backup. It keeps a secure record of everything in your wallet, along with any other important personal information. It can remind you (in advance and annually if desired) of any long term event.
Virtual Wallet Features:
• Virtual Wallet Notifier--Notifies you when your cards expire and
of all your long-term engagements.
• Variable key DES encryption. All your data is password secured.
• Handy drag-and-drop utility Calendar.
• Pre-formatted report printing.
How to get started:
First, you must install the Notifier:
1) Make sure your computer's date is set correctly. You can change it using the alarm clock, which can usually be found in the apple menu.
2) Double-click on "VW Notifier". The only change that you will notice is that its icon will turn gray.
3) Drag "VW Notifier" into your Startup Folder, which is inside your System Folder.
Note: Virtual Wallet 1.0 is shareware, and costs $18.90. You will not be able to save any notification information until you register. This program uses AutoPay™, so that you can pay for this program with a credit card or check via modem, phone, mail, or fax. If you use this program, please pay for it. Either see "About Virtual Wallet" under the apple menu or respond to the dialog when saving you wallet data.
Next, you must set up your Wallet:
Explanation of Wallet Preferences:
Name: You must enter your name so that Virtual Wallet can associate your Wallet Data with your Notification information.
Password: All your wallet data is all encrypted with variable key DES encryption, which is a U.S. government standard. This means that no one, either on your computer or over a network, will be able to read the information in your wallet. This also means that if you forget your password, your data is lost. So, pick a password that you can remember, but that isn't an English word or easy to guess. You can change your password at anytime by choosing "Preferences..." from the File menu.
Best Time to notify me: This is the time of day that VW Notifier will display your message. If your computer is off or asleep during the time you entered, Notifier will display your message as soon as your computer is turned on.
Notify Options:
• If "Play Alert Sound" is checked, an alert sound will accompany the message.
• If "Open Virtual Wallet" is checked, the Notifier will open Virtual Wallet and display the "Recent Notifications Screen" (see below). This is provided in case someone else often uses your computer. If they forget to tell you about your message, this will provide a lasting indication of your notification.
Printing Options: If desired, Virtual Wallet will print a formatted report of your Wallet data. Since this printed report is not as secure as your encrypted data, you have the option of not printing your card numbers. Only print your card numbers if it is absolutely necessary.
Inside your Wallet:
There are two types of information that you can record in your wallet: Cards and Reminders.
Card: A card is a credit card, ID card, driver's license, etc.
Reminder: A reminder is a birthday, anniversary, or any long-term engagement. Unlike a card, a reminder can be set to notify you every year on the requested date.
New creates an empty card or reminder. To open a card or reminder, either double-click on it or click it once and select Open. To delete a card or reminder, click on it and select Delete. You can delete all the cards and reminders from your wallet by choosing Delete all... from the menus.
Note: When you open a card or reminder, it is removed from your wallet for editing. If you try to save your wallet without closing all you cards and reminders first, a VW will ask you if want to insert all open cards into your wallet before saving.
Cards:
Enter all pertinent information about your card. The only field you are required to fill is the "Card Name". The expiration date is originally set to today's date. You can change each date menu individually, or drag-and-drop a date from the Calendar (see below). If you do not want to be notified when the card is expired, or the expiration date is irrelevant, leave the "Notify me" menu on "Never".
Reminders:
Enter your description in the "Remind me to:" field, and, if desired, enter any notes. Then select a date and a notify mode. If you choose "Every year", the year menu will be ignored.
Some examples of Reminders you may want to use:
• Birthdays
• Anniversaries
• Warranty expiration dates
• Library book return dates
• Bank account or social security numbers
• Password listings
• Scheduled car maintenance
Saving your Wallet:
Once you enter all your wallet information, choose "Save" from the file menu.
IMPORTANT: Once you save your data, make a copy of both your wallet and the Virtual Wallet 1.0 and save them on a diskette or alternate hard drive. To make sure that you can access it again, quit Virtual Wallet, double-click on your duplicate wallet document, and enter your password. REMEMBER: Your data is encrypted, so if your file somehow becomes damaged, you may not be able to access any of your data. Make sure you have a working backup copy.
If you have not registered already, a dialog will appear asking if you would like to purchase Virtual Wallet now. If you choose "Purchase...", the program will launch into AutoPay's™ software, through which you can pay for Virtual Wallet with a credit card or check via modem, phone, mail or fax. Notification information will not be saved until you register, and, even though you are permitted to save Virtual Wallet files, you are obligated to purchase Virtual Wallet if you retain a copy of it for more than two weeks.
If you do decide to register, Virtual Wallet will create a special file in your Preferences file named "Virtual Wallet 1.0 key". This file records that you registered. If you want to transfer Virtual Wallet to another computer that you own, make sure that you transfer:
1) The key file (If Virtual Wallet can't locate this file, it will assume you did not register)
2) The Wallet Notifications file in the Preferences folder.
3) VW Notifier in the Startup Folder.
Calendar:
The Calendar is mostly self-explanatory. Two features which may not be that obvious:
1) Click on the header bar "S M T ..." to go to the current month.
2) You can click on any day, hold the mouse button down, and drag the cursor to any open card or reminder to set the date automatically.
About Notifications:
At the date and time you specify, VW Notifier will display a message notifying you about either an expired card or a relevant reminder. Whenever you save your wallet, these messages are saved automatically in the "Wallet Notifications" file in the Preferences folder.
In order to make sure that you see the notification, the VW Notifier uses a special Macintosh feature which allows it to display your message in front of any program that you may be working on. However, once you click "OK", the notification is gone.
That is why you can choose to open Virtual Wallet when you are notified. When VW Notifier opens Virtual Wallet, a window will be displayed that lists all Notifications in the last month.
In case someone else was working on your computer and forgot to tell you about your notification, this screen will serve as "backup". Furthermore, this lets you quickly review all notifications within the last month without having to open your wallet document.
Note: Notifications are not encrypted. Thus, if you choose to be notified, do not enter any private information in the "Card Name" or "Remind me to:" fields.
In order for VW Notifier to locate Virtual Wallet, you must keep Virtual Wallet on your startup volume (the disk drive that contains your system folder). To disable VW Notifier, drag it out of the Startup Folder and restart your computer.
That's it. If you have any suggestions, concerns, or compliments, please enter them in the space provided when registering.
Thank you for trying Virtual Wallet,
Adam (AL) Lieb
